Printemps de Bourges: Springtime's Highlight of the French Music Scene

Printemps de Bourges: Springtime's Highlight of the French Music Scene

The Iris Featured Country for April is France, and what a perfect opportunity to pay homage to the highlight of the year of the French Music Scene: the Printemps de Bourges festival!

Since 1977, Printemps de Bourges has been the city's main cultural event, chronicling the rich history and evolution of French music. The festival brings together both established and emerging musical artists, visual art, various workshops, along with the local bars, restaurants, and music venues (it sounds a bit like France's counterpart to our South by Southwest festival in Austin, TX - held around the same time of year too!).

Spanning a vast array of music genres from rock and pop to hip hop and electronica, roughly 250 concerts are held during the 6 day span of the festival (April 16-21 this year), and in recent years has logged attendance upwards of 80,000 people!

Le Printemps de Bourges

An otherwise quiet town, during the festival Bourges is home to 15 restaurants that partner with the festival to accommodate guests, as well as 15 bars that (along with 10 concert halls that hold up to 6,500 guests) host concerts from afternoon until dawn, drawing thousands of curious spectators into the streets. The city is proud of the festival, and the locals give Printemps de Bourge a feeling of celebration and community.

The festival takes place over the French school holidays, conveniently, as the festival attendees are largely young people (90% under the age of 35), and also provides a wonderful platform for emerging artists to be discovered. Les iNOUïS – the festival's curation of 30 emerging musical artists selected to perform at the festival, providing an opportunity to break into the music scene, via their New Discoveries label which partners for distribution with EMI France.
